This exhibition, titled Pennsylvania Family Recipes, was created by Paige Szmodis for the course LIS-448 Digital Stewardship to showcase a selection of her grandmother's recipe cards and books.
About the Pennsylvania Family Recipes Collection
From the kitchen of Deborah (Debbie) Szmodis, this collection of Pennsylvania Family Recipes contains a small sampling of recipes collected by the Szmodis family from the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. These recipes focus on desserts, including cakes, pies, Christmas cookies, and more.
Most recipes are typed or handwritten on index cards or other scrap papers, such as notepads from auto parts companies found in the mechanic shop of Debbie's husband or paper from the Bethlehem Steel, where her father-in-law worked. Select recipes are influenced by local Pennsylvania Dutch and German culture, such as Shoo-Fly Pie and Funny Cake. Explore these recipes on the page titled “Recipe Box.”
A printed Pennsylvania Dutch Cook Book set of six booklets adds more information about traditional PA Dutch recipes, including Fraktur-inspired illustrations. View this complete digitized set on the page titled “Recipe Books.”
