{"id":830,"date":"2013-10-31T16:13:28","date_gmt":"2013-10-31T16:13:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cocis.simmons.edu\/sites\/blog\/2013\/10\/31\/childrens_librarian_librarian_i_beatley_central_library_alexandria_va\/"},"modified":"2013-10-31T16:13:28","modified_gmt":"2013-10-31T16:13:28","slug":"childrens_librarian_librarian_i_beatley_central_library_alexandria_va","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cocis.simmons.edu\/sites\/blog\/2013\/10\/31\/childrens_librarian_librarian_i_beatley_central_library_alexandria_va\/","title":{"rendered":"Children&#8217;s Librarian, Librarian I, Beatley Central Library, Alexandria VA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Under the direct supervision of the Youth Services Manager, the incumbent is responsible for assisting children and caregivers at the Children&#8217;s Information Desk and providing general support for the Youth Services Department, including programming, collection development and outreach.<\/p>\n<p>?<\/p>\n<p>Duties:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Answers all types of reference questions using traditional, electronic, and internet sources in an efficient and courteous manner.?<\/li>\n<li>Assists patrons in selecting and locating materials.<\/li>\n<li>Plans and performs children&#8217;s programs including story times for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children.<\/li>\n<li>Visits schools to promote library events such as summer reading.<\/li>\n<li>Stays abreast of new children&#8217;s literature in order to better provide readers&#8217; advisory services.<\/li>\n<li>Compiles bibliographies on subjects of interest to children and parents.<\/li>\n<li>Conducts shelf reading and weeding of collection.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrates use of catalog and electronic databases to patrons.<\/li>\n<li>Designs attractive, thematic book displays.<\/li>\n<li>Interprets policies and procedures of the library to the public.<\/li>\n<li>Other duties as assigned.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>?<\/p>\n<p>Skills, Abilities and Experience:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ability to communicate clearly and in a friendly and positive manner with staff and library patrons from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.<\/li>\n<li>Excellent customer service skills.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of integrated library systems and technology.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of children&#8217;s and young adult literature.<\/li>\n<li>Experience in a library or educational setting<\/li>\n<li>Enthusiasm for the work and a willingness to try new things.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>?<\/p>\n<p>Qualifications:<\/p>\n<p>Minimum: Master&#8217;s Degree in Library &amp; Information Science from an ALA-accredited school. Applicant must possess or obtain, within 3 months of hire, a license to practice as a registered professional librarian by the Commonwealth of Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>?<\/p>\n<p>?<\/p>\n<p>Schedule:<\/p>\n<p>40 hours per week. Hours will be scheduled to meet the needs of the children&#8217;s department and will include one evening per week, every third Saturday and occasional Sundays.<\/p>\n<p>?<\/p>\n<p>Salary:<\/p>\n<p>??-?? per hour, depending on qualifications.?
