The Pennsylvania Dutch Cook Book is a box set of six booklets, each with eleven pages of recipes. The booklets include "Cakes, Filling, and Frostings," "Candies," "Cookies," "Pies and Pastries," "Sweets and Sours," and "Vegetables and Salads."
The cook book was published by Luden's, the candy and cough drop company founded by William H. Luden in Reading, PA in 1879.
The cover of the box reads "Out of Life you get, what into you put!", "Pennsylvania Dutch Cook Book from Luden's famous for quality products since 1881." The book and each booklet's cover have illustrations resembling Pennsylvania Dutch Fraktur folk art.

Shoo-fly pie is a molasses crumb cake baked in a pie crust, originating from the Pennsylvania Dutch. Shoo-fly pies are either made with a wet bottom with a gooey layer of molasses at the bottom or dry bottom with a more even, cake-like consistency throughout. This recipe creates a wet-bottom pie, and was written on a piece of paper, then folded into eight quadrants.

It’s also known for being "funny" because the layer of chocolate, after being poured on top of the batter, will sink to the bottom of the pie when baking.
